Thirty-one active University of Michigan transportation research projects are currently supported by the federal Department of Transportation, with $8 million funded during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2021.

DOT partners with researchers across the U-M campus to ensure a safe, efficient and modern transportation system, which improves quality of life and increases the productivity of workers and businesses.

Prof. Henry Liu

Henry Liu, incoming director of Mcity, effective Jan. 1, 2022, leads a $9.95 million smart intersections project funded by DOT’s Federal Highway Administration. More than 20 intersections in the city of Ann Arbor will be equipped to gather and transmit information in real time to connected cars, potentially providing warnings when vehicles are in dangerous situations.

Liu is also a professor of civil and environmental engineering, a research professor in the U-M Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and director of the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation.

Mcity works with multiple units on campus, including UMTRI and the College of Engineering, on research related to advanced mobility, including connected and automated vehicles.
